I’ve alluded several times to the theory of commoditizing the complement. Hal Varian at Google sometimes uses the example of a hypothetical company that sells only right shoes. Their addressable market is defined by the number of unaccompanied left shoes in existence, so anything they do that increases the number of left shoes sold benefits them.
